Camocim comes from a Tupi-Guarani word for the vessel you bury the dead in - a hole, or a pot, for a body - and it is generally read as a reference to the funerary practice of the Tremembé, who lived along this coast long before anyone thought to build a wharf here. The Tremembé buried their dead in ceramic urns. The Portuguese took the word for a place name and moved on. Four centuries later the town still carries it, on a river mouth that has already changed its mind once about whether Camocim should be a port at all.
