The festival is called O Maior Sao Joao do Mundo - the biggest Saint John's in the world - and Campina Grande has been making the claim long enough that nobody local bothers to argue it. What can be checked is the scale. For all thirty days of June the city hands itself over to forro: accordion, zabumba drum, triangle, and dancers who keep going until the accordion player's hands give out. The Ranking Brazil Institute recognises it as the largest Sao Joao celebration in the country, and the crowds typically total around two million people over the month. In a city of roughly 419,000, that means Campina Grande spends June hosting five times its own population.
