Look at Brazil from above the Atlantic and the northeast corner reaches out toward Africa like a thumb. The tip of that thumb is Cabo de Sao Roque, a low headland in the municipality of Maxaranguape, 51 kilometers north of Natal, where the coastline stops running north and begins running west. Excluding the offshore specks of Atol das Rocas and Fernando de Noronha, no part of mainland Brazil sits closer to the African continent. For four centuries of sail, that made this unremarkable stretch of dune and cliff one of the most consequential pieces of geography in the South Atlantic.
