Photo credit Dryland94, CC BY-SA 4.0. Guidebooks written not long ago described the coast around Sihanoukville as being developed for tourism but still largely unspoilt, with peaceful beaches. Those sentences are now period documents. From about 2016 the town was rebuilt in a few frantic years on Chinese capital: by 2019 more than nine in ten businesses there were Chinese-owned, upwards of a hundred casinos were planned, and in the decade since it has become better known internationally as a centre for online scam operations than for its sand. Turn inland and the arithmetic reverses. The mountains behind that coastline have absorbed almost none of it. The Cardamom and Elephant Mountains region - Battambang, Koh Kong, Pursat, Kampong Speu, Kampot, Kep, Pailin and Sihanoukville - is a place where the edges move fast and the middle hardly moves at all.
