It is real Russian, real Crimean War, captured at the Battle of Balaclava on 25 October 1854 — the same battle where the Light Brigade made their suicidal charge under the command of James Brudenell, the seventh Earl of Cardigan. Brudenell's title comes from this town. After the war, somebody decided the captured gun should come here, to the borough that gave the cardigan its name. It has stood outside the guildhall since 1871.
