Every winter, the people of Vinaròs build a giant wooden man, dress him in an elaborate costume, parade him through the streets for eleven days, and then set him on fire on the beach. He is called the Carnestoltes, the spirit of misrule, and his blaze is the exact moment Carnival ends and Lent's austerity begins. Between his unveiling and his burning, this small fishing town on the Castellón coast turns itself inside out, in one of the most exuberant carnivals anywhere in Spain.
