Step left, North Carolina. Step right, South Carolina. The line has been there since opening day on March 31, 1973, when Charlotte businessman Earl Patterson Hall finally cut the ribbon on a 407-acre theme park he had been planning for four years and his investors had been waiting four years longer than that. Half a century later, the park remains the only major amusement attraction in America deliberately built on a state border - and the line itself has become one of the most photographed spots on the property.
