Photo credit Danilo(Roxette), CC BY 3.0. You do not look at the Cajueiro de Pirangi. You walk into it. From the road it registers as a low green canopy the size of a couple of football pitches, and the natural assumption is that you are seeing a grove. Then you step under the edge and find the ceiling continuous overhead, held up by dozens of trunks — and every one of those trunks belongs to the same tree. It has been growing on this patch of sandy coastal soil in Pirangi do Norte, just south of Natal, for something on the order of a thousand years, and it has spent that time doing what almost no cashew tree does: refusing to grow up.
