Photo credit Original uploader was Dave Bunnell at en.wikipedia, CC BY-SA 2.5. The Bororo gave this cave its name long before anyone measured it: Aroe Jari, the dwelling of souls. They held funeral ceremonies inside it. Whatever a visitor makes of that today, the choice of site is easy to understand within a few steps of the entrance — a gap in the rock roughly ten meters high and sixty wide, opening into a passage that runs level and dark for a kilometer and a half beneath the Mato Grosso cerrado. Sound behaves strangely. Daylight quits early. Aroe Jari is the largest sandstone cave in Brazil, and it is not shaped like the caves most people have been in.
