A noble who wanted a decent riding horse or a matched carriage pair had to buy abroad, and the money went with him. The solution was signed on 27 July 1735 by George II — king in London, elector in Hanover, duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg — and executed by his minister Gerlach Adolph von Münchhausen: put excellent stallions within reach of ordinary local breeders, let the mares of the region do the rest, and wait. It worked so thoroughly that the breed which came out of it is simply called the Hanoverian.
