The bombs fell on Celle exactly once. On 8 April 1945 Allied aircraft hit the railway goods yard on the edge of town, destroying sixty-seven houses — a little over two per cent of the place. Everything else stood: the ducal palace, the market square, the crooked lanes of oak-framed shops. That survival is why visitors come. What happened in the woods over the next two days is why the town also keeps a memorial.
