Charlottesville's public structures lean Jeffersonian - brick, columned, classically proportioned - because the city has been organized around his presence since he started building Monticello on a nearby hilltop in 1768. The shadow he casts is long and warm and also impossibly complicated, because Charlottesville is the city where Mr. Jefferson's slavery and Mr. Jefferson's university and Mr. Jefferson's design ideals all sit in the same square mile, still working themselves out in real time.]]></description>
