When the sawmill at Chemainus was rebuilt in the early 1980s with automated machinery, the new plant could make more products, faster, with 145 workers instead of about 600. In a town whose entire reason for existing was that mill, that arithmetic reads like a death notice. What Chemainus did next was not obvious and has been studied ever since. It painted the walls. Fifty-three outdoor murals now cover the buildings of the main street, turning the town into a gallery you walk through without buying a ticket, and the tourists who come to see them are the reason there is still a town to walk through.
