Cherkasy stretches along the water like few cities in Ukraine can, with fifteen kilometers of sandy Dnipro shoreline running past its edge. Set on the high right bank where the great river swells into the Kremenchuk Reservoir, this oblast capital in the heart of the country wears many identities at once: medieval fortress, cradle of the Cossacks, Soviet chemical powerhouse, and, in gentler seasons, an open-air gallery where artists carve statues from ice, wood, and stone and set them out in the parks. It is a working city that never strays far from its river.
