For centuries this was the capital of Menorca, its most important town and its chief port, a place whose very name means citadel. Then in 1708 the crown was taken from it, and the machinery of government moved to a rival harbour on the far side of the island. Ciutadella might have withered. Instead the demotion spared it. Left off the main stage, its tangle of medieval Gothic streets was never bulldozed for progress, and today the honey-colored old town on Menorca's west coast is one of the most intact in the Balearics precisely because history passed it by.]]></description>
