Lake Hartwell laps at the western edge of both the city and the campus. On football Saturdays the town becomes a logistics problem dressed in orange. The rest of the year it is a small Piedmont college town with botanical gardens, a 1789-era stone church and cemetery, and a complicated history written into the buildings that bear John C.
