Coast Guard Base Elizabeth City spans 822 acres on the south bank of the Pasquotank River, hosts seven major commands, and pumps an estimated $500 million a year into northeastern North Carolina. It is the largest employer in that part of the state. Most Americans have never heard of it, which is exactly how the Coast Guard prefers it.
