Four hundred terreiros. That is the count most often given for Codó — four hundred houses of worship in the Afro-Brazilian religious traditions, in a city of roughly 114,000 people in the interior of Maranhão. Other estimates run nearer three hundred. Either figure would be remarkable; no other Brazilian municipality is credited with so many, and one of the traditions practised in them, terecô, was born here and is found essentially nowhere else in the same form. Codó is a working agricultural and commercial town on a river in a palm forest. It is also one of the most religiously distinctive places in Brazil.
