Córdoba is Argentina's second-largest city, home to about 1.5 million people in the city proper (and roughly 1.6 million in the wider metropolitan area), set in the country's geographic heart between the flat Pampas and the rising Sierras. Its university opened in 1613, making it one of the oldest in the Americas, and that deep current of learning runs beneath everything: the colonial churches, the software firms, the aircraft factory on the edge of town, and the fast, blaring cuarteto music that pours out of dance halls on weekend nights. Few cities mix the very old and the very new so casually.
