      <description><![CDATA[One of the people who sheltered in this cave was in real pain. His gums were inflamed, his teeth badly worn, and the sockets had pulled away from the bone. So he did what a person in that kind of discomfort does: he found a small pointed tool and worked at the sore spots, leaving two faint grooves on the surviving teeth that survived him by tens of thousands of years. He was a Neanderthal, and his jaw is one of the oldest hints that our ancient cousins tried to treat their own aches.]]></description>
