Behind the beaches, limestone mountains climb as high as 1,500 meters, cut through by canyons and hollowed by caves; behind the mountains, a flat golden steppe rolls north into vineyards and orchards. Crimea is a small peninsula - a diamond of land jutting into the Black Sea - but it packs an improbable range of landscapes and an even more improbable depth of history into its edges. Long famous as a luxurious playground of resorts, it was once where Russian tsars and Soviet leaders came to escape the summer heat.
