The road the tsars once rode still climbs into these mountains, but almost no one else is allowed to follow it. The Crimean Nature Reserve is a place designed to keep people out. Draped across the main ridge of the Crimean Mountains above the coastal town of Massandra, it is a strict scientific reserve where recreation, construction, hunting, and fishing are all forbidden by law, and where the only way in is a single guided route tracing the old Romanov Trail. What that protection guards is the wild backbone of the whole peninsula, rising to the highest ground in Crimea.
