On 5 February 1864 the Danish commander-in-chief, Christian Julius de Meza, looked at the frozen Schlei and the frozen marshes on either flank of his position, understood that a wall built to be unflankable had just been flanked by the weather, and pulled his entire army out overnight. It was, militarily, the right call - almost the whole force got away to Dybbøl. It was also, to a nation that had spent fifty years teaching itself that this earthwork was the physical edge of Denmark, an act close to sacrilege. De Meza was relieved of his command within weeks. The wall he abandoned had by then already stood, in one form or another, for something like fourteen hundred years.
