Domfelsen: Introduction

If you could walk out onto the rocks below the cathedral, the Elbe was low; if the Elbe was low the season had been dry; and if the season had been dry the grain would be short. So the outcrop picked up a second name. Officially it is the Domfelsen, the cathedral rocks. Locally it was the Hungerfelsen — the hunger rocks — a landmark that only shows itself in the years you would rather it stayed hidden. It is an odd sort of monument: a low grey ledge of sandstone in the middle of a working river, easy to miss from the promenade above, and, for generations, wrongly credited as the reason there is a city standing over it at all.
