The salt marsh that runs along the north Lincolnshire coast, otherwise quiet but for the occasional thump of a practice bomb on the range, fills with grey seals - mothers, pups, and the bull seals that patrol the fringes. The pups are born with white fur the colour of fresh snow, and they lie on the sand looking like soft toys while their mothers feed them. Behind a double wooden fence, the visitors come in their thousands. The seals look back without much interest. The arrangement, ridiculous on paper, has settled into one of the most beloved wildlife spectacles in Britain.
