The town is named after a houseplant. When Irio Spinardi, João Vendramini, and the brothers Virgílio and Florêncio Fioravanti laid the foundation stone of their settlement on December 8, 1945, they had a wattle-and-daub shack, a survey plan, and no name. So they ran a contest. The winning entry was Dracena — the dracaena, a leafy ornamental with striped green and yellow blades, the kind of thing that sits in a pot by a doorway. Eighty years later some 45,000 people live in a municipality called after a decorative shrub, on land that in 1945 was still zona da mata: standing forest in the far west of São Paulo state, being converted to farmland as fast as men with axes could manage it.
