Christ's head rose above the upper edge, his hands reached out at either side, his feet rested at the bottom, and everything the thirteenth century believed about seas, cities, beasts and history was crowded into the space between them, with Jerusalem at the centre. The thing measured roughly 3.6 metres on a side — thirty sheets of sheepskin parchment sewn together — and it was the largest map of the world medieval Europe is known to have made. It burned in 1943.
