Henry Adams nicknamed it Mullett's architectural infant asylum. The architect, Alfred B. Mullett, beset by financial troubles, lawsuits over its cost overruns, and ill health, died by suicide in 1890, two years after the building was finished. None of this stopped the granite confection from becoming one of the most important workplaces in American government. The Eisenhower Executive Office Building has housed sixteen Secretaries of the Navy, twenty-one Secretaries of War, and twenty-four Secretaries of State. Eight future presidents had offices here before becoming president. The building everyone hated has become, over a century and a third of continuous use, the building no one will tear down.]]></description>
