Within a year of the founding, the crown was pressing the new burghers to relocate to Viipuri, which war had wrecked and which needed people. Four years later the king founded Helsinki, and the inhabitants of Ekenäs, Porvoo and Rauma were ordered to move there instead. It is a strange origin for a town — chartered and then repeatedly asked to dissolve itself — and it set the pattern for four centuries of Ekenäs being overlooked. That neglect is now the town's greatest asset. What a place never gets rich enough to rebuild, it keeps.]]></description>
