Esbjerg: Introduction

Almost every city is an accident of geography. Esbjerg is a decision. When Denmark lost the Second Schleswig War in 1864, it lost Altona — its most important North Sea harbour — to German control, and a country whose living came off the water suddenly had no western door. In 1868 the state resolved to build one. The chosen site on the south-west coast of Jutland held a few farms and about four hundred people. Denmark's fifth-largest city grew out of that decision in a little over a century, and it has never quite stopped looking like something planned on paper.
