In 1853, an enslaved woman washing gravel out of the Bagagem River in western Minas Gerais lifted a diamond of more than 250 carats from her pan. She carried it to the mine's owner, Casimiro de Moraes, rather than concealing it, and he responded according to the peculiar etiquette that governed such moments: he granted her freedom and a pension. The stone went to Amsterdam, where cutters at Coster reduced it to a 128.48-carat cushion and dealers gave it a name - the Star of the South. The town beside the river had been called Bagagem. In time it took the diamond's name instead, and it has been Estrela do Sul ever since.
