You see why from ten kilometres out on the Baltic coast road: two steel arches sweeping up from a flat horizon and meeting at a point, the roadway hanging beneath them on a lattice of crossed cables. It is not a subtle piece of engineering and it was never meant to be. When the Fehmarn Sound Bridge opened on 30 April 1963, it closed the last gap in a route that had spent decades being promised, and it made the silhouette that has stood for the island of Fehmarn — and for much of Schleswig-Holstein — ever since.

Fehmarn Sound Bridge: Flight Context

Photo credit Eagle X, Public domain. The Fehmarn Sound Bridge crosses at 54.400°N, 11.1117°E, linking the island of Fehmarn to the Wagrian mainland near Großenbrode. The paired steel arches rise 45 m above the deck and are visible from well offshore — the single most conspicuous man-made structure on this stretch of Baltic coast. Best viewed from 1,500-2,500 ft AGL on an east-west track along the sound, which also frames the tunnel construction works to the south. Nearest airfields: Lübeck-Blankensee (EDHL) roughly 70 km southwest and Hamburg (EDDH) about 130 km southwest; a small grass strip serves the island itself. Strong Baltic crosswinds are routine here and can be gusty in the lee of the island; expect the best light and clarity on northwesterly days.
