Cowboys who had walked herds down from Minas Gerais, Goiás and the two Mato Grossos would reach Barretos in the afternoon, hand the cattle over to the slaughterhouses, and then look around for the worst-tempered horse in the string. Whoever stayed on the longest won nothing but the telling of it. That afternoon habit is the direct ancestor of an event that now draws roughly a million people to a single São Paulo town every August — the largest rodeo in the Southern Hemisphere, held in an arena designed by the architect of Brasília.
