On the morning of 12 January 1945, south of Hanko, the Finnish minelayer Louhi and her consort Ruotsinsalmi laid a barrage the planners had labelled Vantaa 3, then turned for home. At 12:50 an explosion tore open Louhi's stern. She was gone in two minutes, taking ten men down forty metres to the seabed. Over the following month the mines she had planted that morning found and destroyed two German U-boats and killed 105 more men — an afternoon's work she never learned about.]]></description>
