For fifty weeks of the year the woodland near Zernikow looked like every other stretch of Brandenburg pine: dense, dark, unremarkable, the kind of managed forest that covers much of the Uckermark. But roughly a hundred of the trees in it were larches, and larches are conifers that behave like broadleaves. For a couple of weeks each autumn they turned gold against the surrounding green, and for a couple of weeks each spring they flushed pale before the pines caught up. In those two narrow windows, and only from directly overhead, the shape they had been planted in resolved into a swastika about 0.36 hectares in size. It had been there, by most accounts, since 1938. Nobody noticed until 1992.
