The rapids in question run through the middle of Forssa on the Loimijoki, and they are the reason there is a town here at all. In 1847 a Stockholm-born entrepreneur named Axel Wilhelm Wahren looked at that stretch of falling water and put a spinning mill beside it. Everything the place became afterwards - a company town, a red town, a town that learned what it feels like to shrink - unspooled from that one decision. The coat of arms adopted in 1962 shows a single silver waterwheel on a blue field, which is about as honest as municipal heraldry ever gets.]]></description>
