Forssa: Introduction

Photo credit Tatu Kosonen, CC BY-SA 4.0. The town speaks Finnish and only Finnish, and its name is Swedish. Fors means rapids. The rapids in question run through the middle of Forssa on the Loimijoki, and they are the reason there is a town here at all. In 1847 a Stockholm-born entrepreneur named Axel Wilhelm Wahren looked at that stretch of falling water and put a spinning mill beside it. Everything the place became afterwards - a company town, a red town, a town that learned what it feels like to shrink - unspooled from that one decision. The coat of arms adopted in 1962 shows a single silver waterwheel on a blue field, which is about as honest as municipal heraldry ever gets.
