Frøslev Prison Camp: Introduction

The bargain sounds unthinkable when you say it plainly: in 1944, Danish officials asked the German occupation authorities for permission to build a prison camp on Danish soil. They were not offering to imprison more people. They were trying to keep the ones already being arrested from disappearing into Germany. Danes taken by the Gestapo had been going south to Neuengamme, to Stutthof, to Sachsenhausen, and many were not coming back. If Denmark could hold its own detainees inside its own borders, the reasoning went, they might be fed, visited, counted, and eventually released. The Germans agreed, on one condition — the camp had to sit within sight of the border. It was built at Frøslev, in a stretch of heath and plantation in the far southwest of Denmark, a few kilometres from Germany.
