Frankfurt (Oder): Introduction

Two towns face each other across the Oder, and both put the same bird on their coat of arms. The Gallic rooster of Frankfurt (Oder) also struts on the arms of Słubice on the Polish bank - a shared crest for what was, until 1945, a single city. Słubice was simply the Dammvorstadt, Frankfurt's suburb on the far side of the bridge, no more foreign to a Frankfurter than the far end of any high street. Then the Potsdam Agreement ran the new German-Polish border down the middle of the river, and one neighbourhood woke up in a different country, under a different flag, with a different name. The bridge is still there. For most of the following half-century, crossing it required papers.
