In the valley of the Téné River, among perhaps a thousand huts gathered around the region's first great conical mosque, the Fouta Djallon kept its conscience. This was Fugumba, the religious capital of one of West Africa's longest-lived Islamic states, and the oldest Fula town in the highlands.
