Photo credit Derbrauni, CC BY 4.0. Every year since 1995, money has arrived in Görlitz from someone who will not give a name. More than half a million a year - marks at first, then euros - earmarked for a single purpose: repairing the old town. The total has passed ten million, and the donor's identity is still unknown. What the money bought is not in doubt. Görlitz came through the Second World War with its medieval, Renaissance and Baroque streets essentially untouched, then spent the next four and a half decades watching them crumble quietly for want of mortar and paint. Since reunification more than 700 buildings have been renovated. The Altstadtmillion, as the annual gift is known here, paid for a good share of that work, and the result is one of the best-preserved towns in Central Europe.
