Goethe came through in 1777 and thought the place was finished. He called it an Imperial city rotted in and with its privileges — a town still clutching ancient rights it no longer had the money to justify. He was right about the decline. What he could not have guessed is that the decline was the town's rescue. Goslar had spent five centuries building in oak and slate on the proceeds of the richest ore body in Germany, and then it stopped being able to afford anything, including demolition. More than 1,500 timber-framed houses are still standing.
