Photo credit Erik Christensen, CC BY 3.0. In 1544 the duchies of Schleswig and Holstein were cut into three. Adolf, third son of King Frederick I, took one of the pieces and made his residence on a small island in the Schlei, and the state he founded took its name from the house he lived in: Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp. It was not a large inheritance. Within two centuries the Gottorp line had put four kings on the throne of Sweden and put its blood into the Russian imperial family, and the dukes themselves had been driven out of the castle that gave them the name. Gottorf today is a museum, and one of the most important secular buildings in northern Germany.
