That was the starting capital for a gallery in a town better known for piers, illuminations, and donkey rides. John and Cuthbert Grundy were local artists who believed Blackpool deserved more than seaside spectacle, and in 1908 the council took them at their word. Three years later, on a corner of Queen Street, an Edwardian baroque building opened its doors with coupled Ionic columns out front and the borough crest carved into its stone pediment.
