Behind a gate in the limestone country of central Mato Grosso lies a chamber where groundwater from the Saloba River pools into a lagoon so saturated with blue that photographs of it look retouched. Columns rise from floor to ceiling, some over five metres tall and a metre thick, built one mineral drip at a time across a span of years no human calendar covers. Brazil's environmental agency closed the cave because too many people had come to see it, and the damage they left behind could not be undone by asking them politely to stop.
