The same calcium carbonate, packed into a different crystal lattice, grows outward in needles and curling petals that pay no attention to which way is down — clusters that look less like rock than like something that bloomed. In a pale chamber under the sertão of Bahia, the Gruta da Torrinha holds one of these that is reckoned the second largest in the world.]]></description>
