Photo credit Municipal Prefecture, Public domain. Everywhere else in Brazil, Carnival means percussion, sweat and crowds. In Guaramiranga it means a saxophone and a cardigan. This town of roughly five thousand people sits at 865 metres in the Serra de Baturité, where the temperature has been recorded as low as 10 degrees Celsius and typically runs between 16 and 25 — cold enough, by Ceará standards, that visitors from Fortaleza arrive dressed for a different country. Every year during Carnival week Guaramiranga fills up for a jazz and blues festival, and the effect is deliberately, gloriously incongruous: a mountain town in the northeastern sertão, wrapped in cloud, playing blues while the rest of the country dances.
