Boxes of Halloren Kugeln sit in bakery windows all over Halle, and almost nobody outside the city knows what the shape is quoting. The men who once boiled brine on the banks of the Saale wore a coat with eighteen silver buttons, and they were called Halloren. The chocolate works that opened here in 1804 - the oldest in Germany - took the name, then the button, and the sweet has outlived the trade by generations.
