Photo credit Timm Busshaus, CC BY-SA 3.0. From a distance they look exactly like what they are named for: five fingers of stone reaching out of the flat Malian desert toward the sky. The Hand of Fatima, known locally as Gami Tondo and to climbers as the Needles of Gami, is a row of sheer sandstone towers near the town of Hombori, in the Mopti Region of Mali. The name honors the daughter of the Prophet Muhammad, whose hand is a protective symbol across the Islamic world, and standing beneath these pillars, the comparison feels inevitable.
