Everyone buried here died on this island between 1862 and 1975, inside a penal colony that consumed people at a rate no register ever fully tracked; Vietnamese accounts put the dead in the tens of thousands. Work the subtraction and you have the plain fact of the place. Almost everyone who died on Côn Đảo lies somewhere other than a marked grave, and most of those who do have a grave lie under a marker that records no name at all. This is among the most visited cemeteries in Vietnam, and it is mostly an accounting of absence.]]></description>
