Én is the Vietnamese word for swift, and the swifts nest here in a chamber roughly a hundred meters high, coming and going through gaps in the limestone that a person could not climb. Hang Én - swift cave - was known to local people for centuries before British and Vietnamese cavers put instruments to it in the 1990s and worked out what they were standing in. The mountain has a hole through it 1,645 meters long. Inside that hole there is a river, a beach, a patch of jungle and a climate that behaves differently from the one outside.]]></description>
